Checking out titles from the Axis 360 website
How long is the lending period for an eBook?
The default lending period is 21 days. You can adjust the checkout time from 2 to 21 days if you check out Axis 360 titles from our library catalog. During the checkout process, you will be presented with this option.
How many eBooks can I check out at once?
You can check out up to 20 titles at one time. These are not counted against your limit for print materials.
Can I check out eBooks for my Kindle Paperwhite or Voyage?
No, eBooks checked out from Axis 360 cannot be accessed on a Kindle eReader, such as Paperwhite or Voyage. Use our other eBook platform, OverDrive, to check out eBooks for your Kindle eReader.
Will you be adding more eBooks to the collection?
We purchase hundreds of new Axis 360 and OverDrive eBooks every week. Please visit our eBooks Collection page for a complete list of eBooks that we offer.
Can I suggest a title for purchase?
Yes. Please use our Suggest a Title form to suggest titles for purchase. Due to the high volume of requests we receive daily, we cannot notify you when your title is purchased. Please note that the Library automatically purchases bestsellers and titles from popular and well-known authors.
Downloading a title to your preferred device (e.g. phone, tablet) allows you to enjoy this content offline. Here are the steps to download a title to your device.
- Launch your Axis 360 app.
- If you aren't logged in, choose "San Francisco Public Library" and then enter your 14-digit library card number and PIN/password.
- Tap on the icon with three books, located at the top. This will take you to My Stuff.
- From your My Stuff page, tap on CHECKED OUT (if your current checkouts aren't already displaying by default).
If your title has not automatically downloaded, tap the Download button.
You will be taken to the below screen. At this point, the option to Download will not appear because your title has already been downloaded. You can Remove to download again or just Return the digital title.
Find the title you wish to reserve and tap the PLACE ON HOLD button and confirm. You will be notified by email when the title is available to check out. If your email address isn't already registered with Axis 360, you will be asked to provide it at this time.
How many holds can I place at one time?
You can place up to 20 holds in Axis 360. These are not counted against your print book holds.
What do I do when I receive notice that my hold is ready?
Be sure to read the instructions given in the email. Go to the link provided in the email and proceed to check out the item. You have 72 hours to check out your hold before it expires and is given to the next patron on the holds list.
I clicked on the link in the email notification to retrieve my hold, but it doesn't appear under "My Stuff." What happened?
Make sure you have signed into the correct Axis 360 account, if you have different user accounts in your household.
If it’s an eBook, why is there a waitlist to check it out?
This is the model publishers negotiated with most eBook vendors so that libraries can provide access to eBooks. As a result, borrowing eBooks is similar to checking out physical books – one copy at a time per patron. If another patron has already checked out an eBook, you may put a hold on it.
If the title is available, you may renew it through the Axis 360 mobile app or Axis 360 website three days before the loan period ends. Unlike print books, you will need to download a fresh copy of the title once your current loan has expired. Unfortunately, the Library cannot extend the loan period for digital titles.

In the library catalog, there is an option to check out Adobe ePUB eBooks. What is an ePUB eBook?
ePUB is a specific eBook format. Axis 360 offers access to ePUB-formatted eBooks, but you must use a third-party ePUB reader — such as Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) or Bluefire — to access them; the ePUB format is not compatible with the Axis 360 app. If you are unfamiliar with the ePUB format, check out Axis 360-formatted eBooks instead and access them in the Axis360 app.
What devices can I use to read Axis 360 eBooks?
Most devices running an operating system that allows the Axis 360 application to install onto it should work. See the eBook Software Requirements Chart for more information. NOTE: e-Ink devices, such as Kindle and Nook, are not compatible with Axis 360. Please refer to our OverDrive site to download Kindle-formatted titles.
Is there an Axis 360 app?
Yes. The app is available for Android devices running 4.0 or later, iOS devices running iOS 7 or later, and Kindle Fire tablets.
Do I need BLIO or Adobe Digital Editions to read Axis 360 eBooks?
No. You no longer need BLIO or Adobe Digital Editions to use Axis 360. Download the all-in-one app to read eBooks from Axis 360.
What happened to the desktop Axis 360 app for the PC?
As of 2017, Axis 360 has discontinued its desktop app. If you still have the desktop app installed on your computer, it may stop working at some point.
To access Axis 360 titles from a desktop computer (including Mac OS), go to the Axis 360 website, log into your account with your 14-digit library card number and PIN, go to My Stuff and locate your title, and then click the Read Now in Browser or Listen Now in Browser button. My title won't load after downloading. What's wrong?
If your title doesn't load, try logging out of the app and logging back in. You could also try uninstalling the app and reinstalling it, or returning the item and checking it out again, if no one else is waiting for it. If the problem continues, submit an eBook Help form request.
Error 3515 appears when I try to access Axis 360. How do I fix this?
“Error message 3515. Please contact your library.” indicates that there is a problem with the sign-in credentials or the library card information has been entered incorrectly. To resolve this problem, carefully re-enter your library card number and PIN/password. If the problem continues, submit an eBook Help form request.
I'm trying to use the "READ NOW in browser" feature but receive a "Book ownership not found" error message. What's wrong?
Make sure that you have checked out an Axis360-formatted eBook, versus an EPUB-formatted eBook. If you think you may have checked out an EPUB-formatted eBook, go to your Axis360 account page, return the eBook, and check it out again. (If you check out the eBook from the Axis360 website, you will get the Axis360-formatted eBook by default.)
The app stopped working and/or crashed. What happened?
Be sure that you are using the latest version of the Axis360 app and that your device's operating system is up to date. If your device is running low on storage, free up space to allow your applications to run more smoothly. Also try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. If the problem continues, submit an eBook Help form request.
