Accounts with unpaid charges of more than $50 are blocked from borrowing, renewing, and requesting physical items. To get your account back in good standing please return the overdue item in good condition. Lost or damaged items must be paid for or replaced.

Pay in person or online:

  • If you would like to pay before you receive a bill, contact us and we'll mark the item as lost which will allow you to pay online.
  • If you find the original item and return it within 1 year of payment, you can be reimbursed.
  • LINK+ and InterLibrary Loan (ILL) charges must be paid to the owning library via check or money order. Call 415-557-4406 to discuss before paying.

Replace the item:

  • Please bring a like-new copy (no stickers, stamps, writing, discoloration, etc.) to any library location:
    • Use the item's ISBN to find an exact replacement.
    • Beware when buying inexpensive copies as these items may have stamps, stickers, writing, discolorations, etc. which make them unsuitable.
    • San Francisco Public Library reserves the right to refuse any replacement copy.
  • LINK+ and InterLibrary Loan (ILL) items may not be replaceable. Call 415-557-4406 to discuss.

Please note:

  • MasterCard / Visa are accepted in-person at any SFPL location.
  • Except for LINK+ or ILL items, the Library charges the value of lost or damaged items as listed in the item’s record in the library’s Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • If a specific item’s cost is not listed in the ILS, the Library charges in accordance with the San Francisco Administrative Code – Public Library Fees Schedule.
