The San Francisco Public Library recognizes that many people use a first name that is different from the name on official documents, for a variety of reasons. For some, a chosen name may be an important component of identity. Therefore, the Library has taken steps to allow individuals to self-identify by establishing guidelines for a chosen name to be included in Library Records along with a legal name in order to ensure that all communication with library patrons is affirming and respectful of a person's identity and circumstances.

If you have a name that you would like us to use when we communicate with you, including on email messages about your holds and items you check out, please provide us with your chosen name on your next visit to your San Francisco Public Library.
