Q. What do I need to know when the OverDrive app sunsets in April 2023?

What's happening?

In April 2023, the OverDrive app will be discontinued. OverDrive encourages you to make the switch to Libby, its newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, with the same goal of connecting you to your favorite books and audiobooks.

Why is this happening now?

In 2017, OverDrive launched the Libby app, with the goal of creating a simple and intuitive library app that builds on the core experience from the OverDrive app. OverDrive closely reviewed what was working with the OverDrive app and what could be improved. During this time, it didn't want to interrupt the experience for users, so the two apps have both been available.

Thanks to feedback from librarians and readers like you, Libby is now a great app for everyone and there's no longer a reason to have two apps that do the same thing.

What happens after April 2023?

After the OverDrive app is discontinued, users who try to access the Library’s collection in the OverDrive app will see the following message, informing them they need to upgrade to Libby:

• Transition to Libby overview page: This informational page for users includes an overview about this change, FAQs, and training opportunities.
• Virtual training: Sign up for a virtual training session hosted by team OverDrive.

Options for Kindle Fire devices: Amazon has not yet accepted OverDrive's submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore so the OverDrive app will remain available for Kindle Fire users to download and access until further notice. Users with Kindle Fire devices can also sideload Libby manually following these steps.
